7 Expert-Backed Ways to Keep Your Skin Healthy in the Winter

We enjoy the colder months for the holidays, warm sweaters, and hot chocolate, but we dislike how the weather affects our skin. Our skin appears to change from being hydrated and supple overnight to dry and cracked.

“The air naturally has less moisture in the winter due to the surroundings and abrasive conditions, like the wind. The amount of moisture in the air can also be reduced by internal factors like central heating, “explains board-certified dermatologist Dendy Engelman, M.D., of New York City. “As a result, the skin finds it more difficult to maintain the natural oils that serve as a barrier against environmental aggressors. The skin is subsequently deprived of moisture, becoming dry and cracked as a result.”

  • Use a humidifier

Humidifiers help protect your skin when you’re indoors by replenishing moisture in the air and maintaining the humidity at an ideal level (between 40 and 60 percent), according to Dr. Engelman. She suggests the Canopy humidifier because it is made with technology that inhibits the growth of mold and bacteria and has an evaporative system, which means that it only emits pure, hydrated air and not water vapor.

  • Avoid taking hot showers

Dr. Engelman advises against turning up the heat during the winter months in particular because hot water strips your skin of its natural oils and makes it more prone to drying out, cracking, and flaking. To retain as much moisture as possible, try to cool it at the water temperature. Additionally, in order to avoid that chapped and flaking skin you can use Indulgeo Essential’s 24k gold oil for your face.

  • Moisturize when your skin is still damp

Dr. Engelman advises applying your body oil or lotion just after taking a cool shower (or washing your face) rather than waiting until your skin is completely dry. She says, “This helps lock in extra moisture.” you can also use Indulgeo Essential’s natural advanced face serum. This will help you keep your skin moisturized and hydrated. Face oils are really helpful to keep your skin moisturized and hydrated. It will not make your skin look dry and peeled.

  • Moisturize your lips

Since the skin on the lips is thinner and frequently exposed to the elements, it can dry during the winter. Unlike the rest of our skin, which has about 16 cellular layers, the skin on our lips has between three and five layers. Additionally, unlike the rest of our skin, lips do not have oil glands that keep them moisturized. As a result, it’s crucial to take good care of them.

  • Drink lots of water.

Although Dr. Engelman notes that many people forget to drink water when it’s cold outside, despite the fact that we are all aware of how crucial it is to stay hydrated, drinking water helps restore some of the hydration lost by the skin during the winter, when it is unable to retain moisture as well.

The dry, stagnant air that central heating and heated air conditioning produce can be very bad for your skin. Due to the dry air and the transition from a warm environment to being outside in the cold, your skin may become chapped and cracked. Your skin cells need water to stay hydrated and complete, which reduces the likelihood of chapping and peeling.

  • Check your skincare ingredients

Dr. Engelman advises reading the ingredient list on the back of your products even though you probably already have a go-to moisturizer to make sure you’re using ones that are particularly nourishing at this time of year. She called hyaluronic acid a “superstar ingredient for hydration” due to its capacity to hold 1000 times its weight in water. Ceramides and peptides “strengthen and restore the skin barrier, assisting in moisture retention.” “Thin hydrating oils like jojoba and squalane are also great for preserving the skin’s moisture levels.”

  • Don’t skimp your hand care

We are all constantly washing our hands, as we should be, so it is not enough to simply apply hand cream in the morning and call it a day. To ensure that you never forget to reapply, keep one in your office, purse, and car. Use cuticle oil once a day to add an extra dose of moisture and maintain the health of your nails. Also, it is recommended to use Indulgeo essential oil, which can be helpful for your skin.
